Reality Check: How much drinking is going on?

Many kids in middle school (and older people for that matter) don’t have the real story. Take this quiz--based on a new national survey--for a reality check about drinking in the United States.
It might surprise you.
The quiz has three questions, and each question has three answer choices.
  1. How many 13-year-olds drank in the past month? On average:
    • Most : 9 out of 10
    • Half: 5 out of 10
    • Very few: Less than 1 out of 10
The correct answer is: “Very few: Less than 1 out of 10.” Only about 7 in 100 13-year-olds drank in the past month. So MOST--93 out of 100--did not.
  2. Among kids ages 12 to 17, how many drank in the past month? On average:
    • Most: 8 out of 10
    • Half: 5 out of 10
    • A few: Less than 2 out of 10
The correct answer is: “A few: Less than 2 out of 10.” About 18 in 100 kids ages 12-17 drank in the past month. So MOST--82 out of 100--did not.
  3. How many adults aged 35 and older drank in the past month? (most parents of middle schoolers are this old.) On average:

    • Most: 8 out of 10
    • About Half: 5 out of 10
    • A few: 2 out of 10
The correct answer is “About Half: 5 out of 10.” 52% of adults aged 35 and up drank in the past month. So nearly half drank less recently or not at all.
The final frame reads: “Get it? If you choose not to drink, you’re not alone.”
